Etymology

Αδέλφια is the plural of αδέλφι, the neuter form built on ancient αδελφός. That word joined the copulative prefix a- (together, same) to delphys (womb), so it meant literally someone born of the same womb. The sense narrowed over time to the ordinary word for brother, then in Modern Greek the neuter αδέλφι and its plural αδέλφια became the standard gender-neutral term for siblings.
