The word comes from Ancient Greek ἀδελφή (adelphḗ). It is built from the copulative prefix ἀ- (meaning "same") and δελφύς (delphús, "womb"). So the word literally meant "one from the same womb." The masculine counterpart, ἀδελφός, follows the same pattern.
