Etymology
προϋπόθεση is a compound built from the prefix προ- (before), the prefix ὑπό- (under), and the verb τίθημι (to put, to place). The verb τίθημι goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root *dʰeh₁- (to put, to place), which also underlies English words like do and deed. Greek keeps this root productive in a family of abstract nouns ending in -θεση, such as υπόθεση (hypothesis) and σύνθεση (synthesis). προϋπόθεση means, literally, something laid down under a matter in advance, which is why it now means precondition or prerequisite.
