Etymology

μανία comes from Ancient Greek, tied to the verb μαίνομαι, meaning to rage or be driven out of one's mind. The Greeks used it both for clinical madness and for a god-sent frenzy, as in poetic or prophetic inspiration. The word passed into Latin and then English largely unchanged, which is why English speakers already recognize it. Modern Greek kept the same double life: a clinical term and an everyday word for a strong craze.
