θέτω descends from Ancient Greek τίθημι, meaning to put or place, which traces back to the Proto-Indo-European root *dʰeh₁-, to put or set. That root is one of the most productive in the Indo-European family, and in Greek it underlies a wide network of words built on the stem θε-/θη-, including θέση and θέμα. Modern Greek θέτω is a simplified, non-reduplicated descendant of the ancient verb, now the standard form used in formal and written contexts.
