Εκτίμηση comes from the verb εκτιμώ, formed from the prefix εκ- (out, thoroughly) and τιμώ (to honor, to value), itself from τιμή (honor, price, value). The root sense is about fixing a price or worth on something, which extended to mean both formal valuation and personal esteem. This dual meaning, price assessment and human respect, survives intact in the modern word.
