Etymology
Modern Greek πιλότος is a 19th-century borrowing from Italian pilota (via French pilote), the standard European word for a ship's or aircraft's steersman. The irony is that the Italian word itself likely traces back to a Medieval Greek term for a rudder or steering oar, so the word left Greek in antiquity and came back centuries later in altered form. Because that deep history runs through disputed medieval forms, the exact ancient root is not settled enough to state with confidence.
