Etymology

Δύση comes from Ancient Greek δύσις, meaning a sinking or setting, from the verb δύω, to sink or plunge. Greeks described the sun as sinking below the horizon at day's end, so the word came to mean both sunset and, by extension, the west, the direction where the sun goes down. In modern usage the capitalized form Δύση also names the West as a cultural and political bloc, opposite the East.
