Ηλιοβασίλεμα combines ήλιος (sun) with βασίλεμα, a noun built from the verb βασιλεύω. That verb usually means to reign as a king, but Greek also applies it to the sun's daily descent, as if the sun were ending its reign over the sky each evening. The compound has long served as the standard Modern Greek word for sunset. The first element, ήλιος, descends from one of the oldest Indo-European words for the sun.
