ενδεχομένωςpossibly, perhapsδέχομαιto accept, receiveEtymology
The word comes from ενδέχομαι, a compound of the prefix εν- (in) and δέχομαι (to receive, accept). The neuter present participle ενδεχόμενον, meaning literally something admitted or received as possible, became a noun in its own right: το ενδεχόμενο. It reached its modern sense through legal and administrative Greek, where writers needed a plain noun for a possible future case.
