Etymology

Προθεσμία comes from the ancient Greek adjective πρόθεσμος, meaning fixed or appointed beforehand. That word joins the prefix προ- (before) with θεσμός (a fixed rule or statute), which itself comes from τίθημι (to place, to set). So the noun literally names a time that has been set in advance. Modern Greek kept the word mainly in legal and administrative use, where it now means a deadline or time limit.
