Etymology
Στεριά comes from the ancient Greek adjective στερεός, meaning solid or firm. The feminine form στερεά, used to describe firm ground, gradually became a noun in its own right and shifted in pronunciation to στεριά. The core sense never changed: land is the solid, stable counterpart to the shifting sea.
