Etymology
Ποδόσφαιρο is a modern Greek coinage, not an ancient word. It was formed in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century to translate the English word football, joining πόδι (foot) with σφαίρα (ball, sphere). The foot element traces back through ancient Greek πούς, ποδός to a common Indo-European root for foot. The ball element, σφαίρα, has a disputed origin and is not securely traced to an Indo-European root.
