Etymology

Πρόθεση comes from the ancient verb τίθημι, meaning to place or set. The prefix πρό- means before or forth, so the word literally described a placing forward or a setting out. Over time this concrete sense of setting something out became abstract: what you set out to do, your intention. The same root gives Greek grammar its term for a preposition, a word set before another.
