Etymology
Ψωμί comes from the Byzantine diminutive ψωμίον, itself formed from ψωμός, meaning a morsel or bit of bread. Ψωμός in turn relates to the verb ψώχω, to rub or crumble something into small pieces. Over time the diminutive ending wore down to a simple -ί, and the word settled into its modern meaning of bread in general, not just a crumb of it.
