Etymology
The verb is built from the prefix συν- ("together, with") and the noun ἦθος/ἔθος ("habit, custom"), plus the verb-forming suffix -ίζω ("to make, to do"). It grew out of the ancient adjective συνήθης, meaning "familiar" or "customary". The Greek root ἔθος is the same one behind English "ethic" and "ethos".
