Etymology
Απάτη comes from Ancient Greek ἀπάτη, meaning trick, deceit, or fraud. The Greeks even personified it as Apate, the goddess of deception and trickery, daughter of Nyx. Linguists disagree on the word's deeper origin, and some treat it as a pre-Greek term with no clear Indo-European root. The modern word keeps the ancient sense almost unchanged.
