Etymology

Γύρος descends from ancient Greek γῦρος, meaning a circle or ring. Its origin before that is disputed; some scholars treat it as inherited from Indo-European, others as a pre-Greek borrowing, so no secure root can be given. The word entered English through Latin as the source of gyre, gyrate, and gyroscope, while the food sense (meat turning on a vertical spit) gave English the direct loanword gyro.
