Etymology
γυρίζω is a denominative verb built on the noun γύρος ('circle, ring, turn') with the productive verb-forming suffix -ίζω, so its core sense is 'to make a circle, go round'. Ancient Greek γῦρος 'ring, round' is of uncertain, possibly Pre-Greek, origin, so no secure Proto-Indo-European root can be given. The same γῦρος passed into Latin as gyrus and from there into English gyre, gyroscope, and the food name gyro.
