Etymology
From Ancient Greek σχέσις (skhésis) 'state, condition, relation', a verbal noun built on σχ-, the aorist stem of ἔχω (ékhō) 'to have, hold'. The meaning shifted from 'a way of holding oneself, a state' to 'the way two things stand toward each other', i.e. a relation. It goes back ultimately to the Proto-Indo-European root *seǵʰ- 'to hold, overpower'.
