Etymology
Inherited from Ancient Greek πότε, the interrogative temporal adverb 'when?'. It is built on the Proto-Indo-European interrogative pronominal stem, which in Greek surfaces as πο- across the interrogative series (πού 'where', πώς 'how', πόσος 'how much'), combined with a temporal element also seen in τότε 'then' and ὅτε 'when'. The word has remained remarkably stable in form and meaning from Homeric Greek to today.
