Etymology
From Ancient Greek ἑαυτοῦ (heautoû), the genitive of the third-person reflexive pronoun, a univerbation of the old reflexive ἑ (he, 'himself') and the intensive pronoun αὐτός (autós, 'self, same'). In Modern Greek the form εαυτός was reanalyzed as a masculine noun meaning 'self', almost always paired with a possessive (ο εαυτός μου = 'myself'). The reflexive ἑ- element descends from the Proto-Indo-European reflexive root *swe-.
