Etymology

Inherited from Ancient Greek τότε, formed from the demonstrative pronominal stem το- (the same το- seen in the article ὁ, ἡ, τό) plus the adverbial element -τε. It belongs to a tight set of correlative time adverbs with ὅτε ('when', relative) and πότε ('when?', interrogative). The stem goes back to the Proto-Indo-European demonstrative *to-, the source of many 'that/the/then' words across the family.
