Etymology
Modern Greek πράγμα continues Ancient Greek πρᾶγμα ('a thing done, deed, matter, affair'), a verbal noun built on the root of πράσσω/πράττω ('to do, act, accomplish') with the result-noun suffix -μα. Its sense thus broadened from 'something done' to 'thing, matter' in general. The verb is usually traced back to the Proto-Indo-European root *per- ('to pass over, traverse'), via περάω ('to pass through').
