Etymology
Inherited from Ancient Greek πολύς, which goes back to Proto-Hellenic *poľús and ultimately to the Proto-Indo-European adjective *pl̥h₁ús 'much, many', built on the root *pelh₁- 'to fill'. The word has been continuously used from Homeric Greek to the present day, retaining its core quantitative meaning. Its irregular stem alternation (πολ-/πολλ-) preserves traces of its archaic inflection.
