Etymology

Modern Greek χρόνος continues Ancient Greek χρόνος (khrónos) 'time, duration', a word already central in Homeric and Classical Greek. Its deeper origin is disputed and no secure Proto-Indo-European root has been established. The stem spread internationally through learned borrowing, giving English the 'chrono-' family (chronology, chronic, chronometer), though those are loans from Greek rather than inherited cognates.
