Etymology
χρονικός is built from χρόνος, the Greek word for time, plus the adjective-forming suffix -ικός, meaning roughly 'pertaining to' or 'characterized by'. The origin of χρόνος itself is disputed among linguists, and no secure Indo-European root has been established for it. The word has stayed in continuous use from ancient to modern Greek with essentially the same core meaning, 'of or relating to time'.
