Etymology
Δεσμός comes from Ancient Greek δέω (déō), to bind, plus the suffix -σμός, which forms nouns naming an action or its result. So δεσμός literally means a binding, or the thing that results from binding. The word kept both a concrete sense, a chain or fetter, and an abstract one, a bond between people or things, from antiquity into Modern Greek.
