Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek Μουσεῖον, meaning a shrine or place sacred to the Muses. It is built from Μοῦσα, the goddess of an art or science, and the suffix -εῖον, which marks a place. In ancient Alexandria, the Mouseion was a research institution attached to the great library. The modern sense, a building that displays art or historical objects, developed later and spread to other European languages through Latin.
