Ανάλυση comes from ανα- (up, throughout, again) plus λύση, itself from the verb λύω, to loosen or untie. The compound originally meant a loosening up or breaking apart into parts. Ancient Greek used it in logic and mathematics for resolving a problem into its elements, and English borrowed the word directly as analysis.
