Etymology
Ρυθμός comes directly from ancient Greek ῥυθμός. Writers traditionally linked it to the verb ῥέω, meaning to flow, giving an original sense of measured movement, like the ebb and flow of waves or steps in a dance. Modern linguists, including Beekes, doubt this link on semantic grounds and treat the word's deeper origin as uncertain. English borrowed the word almost unchanged as rhythm.
