Etymology
The verb combines the prefix δια- ("through", "thoroughly") with σκεδάννυμι ("to scatter, disperse"). The original sense was to scatter something away thoroughly, such as worries or gloom. Over time this shifted from "dispel one's cares" to the modern sense of "have fun" or "enjoy oneself". The deeper origin of σκεδάννυμι itself is debated among etymologists, so no further root is claimed here.
