αρχικός is built from αρχή, meaning beginning or origin, plus the adjectival suffix -ικός, meaning pertaining to. The noun αρχή also gave Greek the verb ἄρχω, to begin or to rule, which is the source of English words like archive and monarchy. The exact deeper origin of ἄρχω is debated among linguists, so no single Proto-Indo-European root is settled.
