The word is a compound of στρατός, meaning army, and πεδίο, meaning field or ground. Together they gave a term for the ground where an army sets up, and later any camp. Modern Greek kept the word for military, refugee, and other camps, including the grim compound στρατόπεδο συγκέντρωσης for concentration camp.
