Etymology
Inherited from Ancient Greek στρατός, originally meaning an encamped host or army spread out over the ground. It is traditionally derived from the Proto-Indo-European root meaning 'to spread, stretch out', the same root behind Greek στόρνυμι/στρώννυμι 'to spread'. The army was conceived as that which is 'spread out' in encampment across a field.
