Etymology

Modern Greek borrowed τρένο in the railway age from Italian 'treno', reinforced by French 'train'. The Romance forms go back to French 'train' ('a dragging, train of followers'), from the verb 'traîner' ('to drag'), ultimately from Vulgar Latin *traginare and Latin 'trahere' ('to pull, drag'). The deeper Indo-European source of 'trahere' is disputed, so no secure PIE root is given here.
