Etymology

Λοχίας comes from λόχος, the ancient Greek word for a company or platoon of soldiers, plus the agent-forming suffix -ίας. The word marks the man in charge of a λόχος. Modern Greek kept this structure and narrowed the meaning to a fixed army rank, the equivalent of a sergeant.
