The word joins the prefix υπο- (under, sub-) to λοχαγός, itself a compound of λόχος (a company or band of soldiers) and the verb άγω (to lead). A λοχαγός is the leader of a λόχος, roughly a captain. A υπολοχαγός is thus the officer who ranks just under the captain, the lieutenant.
