μυθιστόρημαnovelEtymology
Παραμύθι comes from the ancient verb παραμυθέομαι, meaning to console or reassure with words. That verb combines παρά (beside, alongside) with μῦθος (word, speech, story). Over time the noun shifted from consolation toward the stories told to soothe children at bedtime, and eventually settled into its modern sense of fairy tale.
