Etymology
The word goes back to Ancient Greek μῦθος, meaning speech, thought, or story, long before it narrowed to the sense of a traditional or fictional tale. Its origin before Greek is not settled. Some scholars treat it as a word Greek inherited from an earlier, non-Indo-European language of the region. English borrowed the word directly as myth in the 19th century.
