Etymology

Γέλιο comes from the verb γελάω/γελώ, to laugh, which goes back to Ancient Greek γελάω with the same meaning. The noun γέλως in ancient Greek named the act of laughing, and modern Greek γέλιο is a later development of that noun family using the common neuter suffix -ιο. Scholars do not agree on a secure root behind γελάω outside Greek, so no reliable outside cognates exist.
