Etymology

From Ancient Greek γελοῖος, derived from γέλως ('laughter') and the verb γελάω/γελῶ ('to laugh'), with an adjectival suffix. It originally meant 'provoking laughter, mirthful' and over time shifted toward the modern sense 'ridiculous, absurd, laughable'. The deeper origin of the γελ- root is uncertain and is often considered Pre-Greek.
