Etymology
Κιθάρα comes from Ancient Greek κιθάρα (kithara), the name of a large stringed instrument played in classical antiquity. The word's deeper origin is disputed and may predate Greek itself, so no secure Indo-European root is established. It later passed through Latin and Arabic into Spanish as guitarra, and from there into English as guitar.
