Etymology

The word joins αλλήλων, the reciprocal pronoun meaning "of one another," with γράφω, "to write," and the abstract-noun ending -ία. Together they spell out "writing to one another." The same αλληλο- element shows up in other Greek words that describe mutual action, such as αλληλεγγύη, "solidarity." γράφω itself traces back to a root meaning to scratch or carve, from the era before ink and paper when writing meant cutting marks into a surface.
