Αιμορραγώ is a modern verb formed from the noun αιμορραγία, itself a learned 19th-century compound built from ancient Greek αίμα (blood) and a form related to ῥήγνυμι (to break, burst). The compound described blood breaking through the walls of a vessel. Doctors used the noun first, and the verb followed as a natural back-formation. Today the word also works as a common metaphor for a large ongoing loss, especially of money or jobs.
