The word joins αίμα (blood), whose combining form is αιμο-, with -ρραγία, drawn from the verb ῥήγνυμι, meaning to break or burst forth. Together the parts describe blood bursting out. Ancient and medieval Greek medical writers used the compound for excessive bleeding, and it passed into Latin as haemorrhagia and from there into most European languages.
