Etymology

In Ancient Greek, ψῆφος meant a small pebble or stone. Greeks used such pebbles for counting and for casting votes, dropping one into an urn to register a choice. From that practice the word shifted from the object itself to the act it performed, and today ψήφος means simply a vote.
