Etymology

Ancient Greek ψῆφος meant a pebble, the kind used for counting votes. From it came ψηφίο, meaning a digit or numeral, and in the twentieth century Greek coined the adjective ψηφιακός to mean digital, describing information stored as discrete numbers rather than continuous signals. The word entered common use with the rise of computers.
