Etymology

Derived from the noun ψῆφος ('pebble'), since in ancient Athens citizens cast their votes by dropping small pebbles into urns. The verb thus originally meant 'to count or decide with pebbles', and by extension 'to vote'. The sense narrowed in modern Greek to voting in elections and to a legislature enacting laws.
