From the verb προφέρω ("to bring forth, utter, pronounce"), itself from προ- ("forth, before") plus φέρω ("to carry, bear"). The noun literally denotes a "bringing forth" of speech, which narrowed to the manner of uttering sounds, i.e. pronunciation or accent. The form φορά reflects the o-grade of the root of φέρω.
